Tatev Monastery is one of the unique and beautiful monasteries in Armenia. It is located on the steep of deep gorge surrounded with very strong settings. It was built during the 9-13th centuries as an Armenian intellectual center where philosophers, musicians, painters, calligraphers and monks lived. Tatev used to be a religious and political center of Syunik princedom. There was a university functioning in that period which had 3 departments: music, painting and science. In the science department Old and New Testaments, as well as performed translations from Greek and other languages of religious manuscripts were taught. The monumental St. Peter-Paul (Sourp Poghos Petros) (895 – 906 y.y.) is the focal point of the complex, which also includes St. Gregory Church (1265 y.), refectory with the kitchen and pantry, monastery services. Monastery's household’s premises are original and majestic. The Monastery had 1000 inhabitants in the 10th century.
