Garni Temple
A Glimpse into Armenia’s Pagan Past
One of the most captivating landmarks you can visit during your trip to Armenia is the Garni Temple, dedicated to the Sun God Mithra. Built in 77 AD by King Trdat I of the Arshakid Dynasty, this Greco-Roman-style temple stands out with its characteristic columns and stunning architectural details. Perched majestically on a rocky ridge, the temple offers breathtaking views of the deep Garni Canyon below.
Garni served as a summer residence for the Arshakid royal family and has witnessed centuries of history. Though heavily damaged by a powerful earthquake in 1679, it was meticulously restored between 1969 and 1974, preserving its ancient grandeur. Visitors can explore the fortified walls, the ruins of the king’s palace, and an ancient bathhouse. A fascinating detail on the bath’s mosaic floor is an inscription in Greek, which reads: “Taking nothing, we labored,” adding to the mystery and charm of the site.
Don’t forget to capture the moment on the temple’s iconic staircase—it will surely be one of the sweetest memories from your visit to this extraordinary cultural and historical site in Armenia.
In Garni Canyon, the spectacular “Symphony of Stones” formation creates the stunning image of cascading crags. This unique landscape, with its dramatic basalt columns, captivates the imagination and showcases the natural beauty of Armenia.
