Khndzoresk

A Journey Through Time

Khndzoresk, a village nestled in the southern part of Armenia, lies 8 km from Goris in Syunik Province. It is a unique settlement divided into two parts: New Khndzoresk, where modern life thrives, and Old Khndzoresk, a mesmerizing testament to Armenia’s ancient past.

Old Khndzoresk: A Cave Village Frozen in Time

Old Khndzoresk is famed for its ancient cave dwellings, which once served as homes for its inhabitants. These caves, carved into the rugged slopes of a mountainous valley, create a breathtaking landscape. A 160-meter-long suspension bridge, recently constructed across the Khndzoresk Gorge, offers visitors a spectacular view of the surrounding cliffs and valleys.

The Origins of Khndzoresk’s Name

There are two fascinating theories about the origin of the village’s name:

  • “Khndzor” (Apple): The area was renowned for its delicious apples, giving rise to its fruity name
  • “Khor Dzor” (Deep Canyon): Reflecting its geographical setting, the name may come from the deep, dramatic canyons that characterize Old Khndzoresk.

The unique structure of the village, with houses stacked vertically on 10-12 meter-high cliffs, made it a fortress-like community where the roof of one home often served as the courtyard of another.

A Historical Stronghold

Thanks to its strategic and impregnable position, Khndzoresk played a key role in Armenia’s fight for independence. The village served as a base for Mkhitar Sparapet, the legendary leader of the 18th-century rebellion against Persian and Ottoman forces. His grave remains a revered site in Khndzoresk.

Religious and Cultural Heritage

In its prime, Old Khndzoresk was a bustling hub, boasting 1,800 homes and 7 schools by 1913. The village was also home to four historic churches:

  • St. Hripsime
  • St. Tadeos
  • Anapati
  • Old Church

During the Soviet era, villagers transitioned from the caves to New Khndzoresk. However, Old Khndzoresk remains a captivating historical monument and an essential destination for those exploring Armenia’s rich cultural heritage.
