Oshakan Village
A Journey into Armenia’s Heart and Heritage
Oshakan is a quintessential Armenian village, rich in preserved traditions, culture, and lifestyle that provide an authentic glimpse into Armenian rural life. The village is especially renowned for St. Mesrop Mashtots Church, a sacred site dedicated to Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian alphabet in the 5th century and one of Armenia’s most revered saints. His relics rest here, and the church, which dates back to the 19th century, stands as a tribute to his monumental contributions to Armenian identity and language. Initially, a chapel marked Mashtots’ burial site, later replaced by this beautiful church that has become a pilgrimage destination.
Adjacent to the church, there once stood a Sunday school that, after the Armenian Genocide of 1915, offered refuge to orphans, adding layers of historical significance and resilience to this serene location. Visitors are invited to explore this meaningful landmark and immerse themselves in the stories and spirituality that define Armenia.
