Zvartnots Cathedral
Zvartnots, a remarkable temple dedicated to the Vigil Forces, was constructed between 641 and 661 A.D. as Armenia’s main cathedral under the direction of Catholicos Nerses III. This architectural masterpiece is one of the wonders of early Christian architecture in Armenia. Although the cathedral suffered damage from an earthquake in the 10th century, the ruins still convey its extraordinary beauty.
The Zvartnots Archaeological Site represents a unique example of early Christian Armenian architecture, featuring a design composed of three polyhedrons. The structure is supported by massive pillars adorned with intricate carvings of eagles and embellished with motifs of grapevines and pomegranate twigs.
Recognized for its cultural significance, Zvartnots was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000. Visitors to this historical site can marvel at the remnants of a bygone era and appreciate the artistic ingenuity of Armenian architects.
