The Mesrop Mashtots Institute of Ancient Manuscripts (Matenadaran)

53 Mesrop Mashtots Av. Yerevan 0009

Located on Mashtots Avenue in Yerevan, Matenadaran is one of Armenia’s most treasured cultural institutions, founded in 1959. This impressive institute is home to one of the world’s largest collections of ancient Armenian manuscripts, with over 17,000 manuscripts, 450,000 documents, and 3,000 ancient books.

Matenadaran’s exhibitions take visitors through Armenia’s medieval sciences, literature, and arts, from the creation of the Armenian alphabet by Mesrop Mashtots in 405 AD to the 18th century. The museum showcases rare and vibrant Armenian miniatures made from natural pigments, including red hues derived from the insect Vordan Karmir, preserving their brilliance over centuries. Among the highlights are the massive Msho Charyntir (28 kg) and the tiniest manuscript in the collection (190 g).

Notable halls include the Armenian Genocide Memorial Hall, exhibiting documents shown for the first time, the Cilician and Artsakh Schools, showcasing Armenian miniature painting, and the Medieval Medicine Hall, displaying historical medical texts with practical insights.

Matenadaran also serves as a leading research and cultural center, ideal for anyone eager to delve deeper into Armenian history, language, and manuscript art.
