Built between the 7th and 13th centuries, this impressive medieval stronghold stands at an altitude of 2,300 meters, overlooking the vast alpine meadows of Mount Aragats. Perched on a rocky promontory, Amberd is considered one of the most impregnable fortresses of medieval Armenia.

From Amberd, begin a trek toward Kari Lake, a stunning high-altitude mountain lake cradled inside the crater of Mount Aragats at an altitude of 3,190 meters. Along the trail, there may be opportunities to encounter Yezidi nomadic shepherds, adding a unique cultural dimension to the hike.

Enjoy a picnic lunch in the heart of nature, surrounded by wide-open alpine landscapes.

Ascent of Mount Aragats South & West Summits – Kari Lake

Mount Aragats is a massive volcanic mountain with four distinct summits, the highest reaching 4,090 meters, making it the highest peak in Armenia. From its slopes, breathtaking panoramic views extend across much of the country. The beautiful landscape of sub mountains and mountain zone entice the travelers and alpinists. In summer, the slopes are covered with green colorful mat.  Here, the lavender and balsam, the sage and alpine chamomile, bellflower, anise and other alpine flowers come across.

Aragats is also one of Armenia’s most important natural water reservoirs. Numerous streams and rivers originate from its eternal snowfields. Meltwater slowly penetrates the volcanic rock before re-emerging as powerful springs — including the famous Arpavan springs.

The day’s trek begins at Kari Lake, ascending first toward the South Summit (3,200 m), followed by the climb to the West Summit, the highest point at 4,080 m. From the summits, enjoy expansive views of snow-covered peaks and the vast Armenian highlands.

After the descent, return to Kari Lake, where the camp awaits.

Depart from Kari Lake toward the Saghmosavank Monastery complex, dramatically perched on the edge of the spectacular Kasagh River Gorge. The main Church of Zion, was built in 1215 at the initiative of Prince Vachе Vachoutian. The monastic ensemble was later expanded with a manuscript depository, added in 1255.

On the territory of the monasteries many richly ornamented stonecrosses have been preserved.

After the visit, return to Yerevan.

At the heart of the volcanic crater lies Lake Vank, a small and perfectly round alpine lake, nestled deep within the cone of the volcano and offering a striking natural contrast against the dark volcanic terrain.

The area is also rich in ancient history. Along the route, discover remarkable Bronze Age petroglyphs, as well as the mysterious megalithic monuments known as vishaps (vishapakar) — stone stelae traditionally associated with water cults and ancient Armenian mythology.

Built in 77 AD by King Tiridates I of the Arshakid Dynasty, this elegant Greco-Roman–style temple stands out with its harmonious proportions and graceful stone columns. It is the only pre-Christian temple still standing in Armenia, making it a unique historical monument.

From the temple, begin a trekking route toward the Azat Gorge, a truly magnificent natural wonder. The gorge is famous for its towering basalt columns, which resemble organ pipes and create the impression of falling rock formations. This extraordinary landscape is known as the “Symphony of Stones”, and its dramatic scenery leaves a lasting impression on all visitors.

Continue with a hike to Havuts Tar Monastery (12th–13th centuries), beautifully hidden within the Khosrov Nature Reserve, on the left bank of the Azat River. Surrounded by wild nature and silence, the monastery offers a powerful sense of remoteness and history.

The day concludes with a traditional Armenian lunch served in the garden of a local artisan family. Tables are set beneath fruit trees, creating a warm and authentic atmosphere. You will observe the preparation of lavash, Armenia’s national flatbread, baked in a traditional tonir (stone-and-clay underground oven). Enjoy authentic Armenian dishes, fresh herbs, local cheese, and experience the warmth of rural hospitality while getting acquainted with local village life.  A glass of homemade wine completes this convivial experience.
