Hiking tour in Armenia - two volcanoes: Aragats and Ajdahak

Day 1:

Arrival in Yerevan. Transfer to the hotel.

Day 2:

Hiking to volcano Aragats

After breakfast take bus, direction Amberd which means "fortress under the clouds" in Armenian. It is one of inaccessible fortress complex of medieval Armenia with a church built XI-XIII centuries on the slopes of Mt. Aragats at 2,300 meters above sea level.

Hike to Lake Qari, a splendid oasis at an impressive altitude (3190 m) in the crater. In the territory encounter with Yezidis.

Day 3:

Aragats volcano - south and west summit

Mountain Aragats, an extinct volcano, is the highest point (4090 m.) of Armenian upland in the territory of Armenia. Entire Armenia is seen from the peak of the mountain. The beautiful landscape of sub mountains and mountain zone entice the travellers and alpinists. In summer, the slopes are covered with green colourful mat. In front of you, the flower valleys look like a painting and the colours seem to be beyond brightness. Here, the lavender and balsam, the sage and alpine chamomile, bellflower, anise and other alpine flowers come across. Aragats is one of the largest reservoirs and water sources for Armenia.

Hiking starts from the lac to south summit (3200 m) after west summit (4080 m).

Back to camp. Overnight.

Day 4:

Lake Qari - Saghmosavank - Yerevan

Drive to the monastery complexes of Saghmosavank. Located on the edge of the precipitous gorge of the Kasakh river the monastery offers the beautifull scenario.The main temple was erected by Prince Vache Vachutyan — the Church of Zion, which belongs to the same type of cross-winged domed structure with two-floor annexes in all the corners of the building. In the territory of the Monastery, the book depository of Saghmosavank built in 1255 A.D.under Prince Kurd Vachutyan is among Armenia’s rare buildings. On the territory of the monasteries many richly ornamented stonecrosses have been preserved.

Drive back to Yerevan. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 5:

Geghama mountain range

After breakfast direction to village Sevaberd from where hiking will start to lake Akna, volcanic origin lake, located at 3030 m of alltitude in the Gueghama mountain range. It is surrounded by magnificent alpine meadows and young volcanic cones that are reflected in the water of the lake.

Day 6:

Lake Akna - volcana Aghdahak- lake Vanq- armenian petroglyphs

Hiking to volcano Aghdahak (Karmirsar ,, red mountain'') 3597 m, which is a highest summit of Geghama mountain range. The crater is filled with water that creat an beatifull small lake Vanq. A lot of petroglyphs dating bronz age and also the megalithic monument vishap or vishapaqar have been found in the surroundings.

Day 7:

Geghard - Goght - Garni

Hiking to Geghard, one of the masterpieces of the medieval Armenian architecture 12th and 13th centuries, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Passing through Goght village, located at the southern foothills of Gueghasar.

Overnight in Garni at the locals.

Day 8:

Garni - gorge Azat– Havuts Tar

Drive to the only remaining pagan temple in Armenia devoted to the God of Sun – Myrth, in Garni, built in 77 AD by King Trdat (Arshakid Dynasty). Treking from the temple to Azat gorge, magnificent and outstanding scene which creates the image of falling crags. It obtained the name "Symphony of Stones" due to its view. The fantastic landscape of the canyon shakes the human imagination.

After, hiking to monastery Havuts Tar dating 12-13th century, located in the Khosrov reserve, on the left bank of the Azat River.

The program will finish with the family hosted lunch in village house with watching of “Lavash” (Armenian traditional flat bread baked in stone-make oven) making process, testing authentic Armenian food, get acquainted with local village life.

Drive back to Yerevan. Overnight in Yerevan.

Day 9:

Transfer to the airport. Departure.
